Description

Systematic position. The Skoh Heterodera (Heterodera skohensis) belongs to the phylum Nematoda, class Chromadorea, order Tylenchida, and family Heteroderidae. It is a specialized phytohelminth, which acts as an obligate parasite, with its biological cycle strictly dependent on the host plant's root system.

Host range. The primary hosts for this nematode are plants belonging to the family Poaceae. Specifically, the pest has been identified on various wild grasses and has the potential to infest cultivated cereal crops under favorable soil and climatic conditions.

Biology and lifecycle. The lifecycle of Heterodera skohensis includes egg, four larval stages, and adult stages. Mature females transform into protective cysts, inside which eggs and larvae can remain in diapause for several years. The emergence of second-stage larvae is triggered by root exudates from host plants, after which they penetrate the root tissue to begin feeding.

Type of damage and harmfulness. Nematode infestation disrupts the normal metabolism within the plant's root system. Affected plants exhibit stunted growth, chlorosis, and a poorly developed root system with signs of abnormal branching. The damage manifests as reduced crop yields, decreased grain weight, and an overall weakened resistance of the plants to secondary fungal infections.

Control measures. Controlling this pest is difficult due to the high survival rate of cysts in the soil. Key management strategies include:

  • Strict adherence to crop rotation cycles including non-host crops.
  • Usage of certified, nematode-free seed material.
  • Implementation of regular phytosanitary field inspections.
  • Removal of weed species that can serve as natural reservoirs for the parasite.
