Description
The sorghum cyst nematode (Heterodera sorghi) is a specialized plant-parasitic nematode belonging to the order Tylenchida and the family Heteroderidae. It is recognized as a significant threat to sorghum production, as it specifically targets the root systems of crops within the Sorghum genus.
This parasite thrives in soil environments where it survives as encysted females. These cysts serve as a durable protective structure for eggs, allowing the population to persist in fields for many years even in the absence of a susceptible host crop, which complicates typical eradication strategies.
The life cycle begins when second-stage larvae hatch and migrate through the soil to locate a suitable host root. Upon penetration, they establish feeding sites, eventually causing the root tissues to swell and malfunction. As the females mature, they become sedentary, their bodies swell, and they eventually form the protective cyst on the root surface.
Symptoms of infestation are often observed as patches of stunted, chlorotic plants that show signs of nutrient deficiency and severe wilting during hot weather. The damage to the root architecture severely restricts the plant's capacity to uptake water, leading to yield reductions that can be catastrophic in high-density cultivation areas.
