Heterodera urticae is a species of plant-parasitic nematode within the order Tylenchida and the family Heteroderidae. These nematodes are recognized for their cyst-forming behavior, where the female's body wall hardens into a protective structure called a cyst, which is designed to protect the eggs from environmental stressors for extended periods.
The primary host for this species is the nettle, though its host range can impact various wild and cultivated plants. Understanding the host range is critical for effective field monitoring and management of this microscopic pest in agricultural environments.
The life cycle involves the migration of second-stage juveniles from the soil to the roots of the host plant. Once they penetrate the root tissue, they become sedentary and begin feeding on plant cells.
