The giant crab spider (Heteropoda venatoria) is a member of the order Araneae and the family Sparassidae. While primarily known as a beneficial predator of insects, it is occasionally categorized as a nuisance pest in agricultural settings, particularly in greenhouses and nurseries where its presence can disturb operations.

This species does not feed on plant tissues or sap, meaning it is not a direct threat to crop health in terms of consumption. However, it is frequently introduced into new regions through international trade of ornamental plants, often causing concern among agricultural producers due to its formidable size and rapid movement.

The biology of Heteropoda venatoria is centered on active hunting rather than web-building. Females carry their egg sacs beneath their bodies, protecting the brood until emergence. The life cycle involves multiple molts, during which the spiders seek humid, sheltered areas to ensure survival and protection from environmental stress.

Damage is indirect and localized. The spiders may cause physical deformation of leaves when constructing shelters or hiding spots within dense foliage. Although they do not destroy crops, their presence often necessitates additional labor for inspection and may require containment strategies to ensure the safety and comfort of greenhouse staff.
