Description

The Huntsman spider (genus Olios), belonging to the family Sparassidae, order Araneae, is often encountered in agricultural settings, particularly in warm-climate orchards and nurseries. While they are essentially predators that feed on insects, their habitat selection on crops often overlaps with human agricultural activities, leading them to be classified as incidental pests in certain commercial systems.

These spiders are commonly found on tropical and subtropical crops, such as coffee, citrus, and banana plants, as well as in greenhouse-grown ornamentals. In an agricultural context, they prefer foliage that offers structural complexity, allowing them to hide during the day and hunt for prey during the night without the use of permanent orb-webs.

The biology of Olios species is adapted to ambush hunting. Females typically construct silk retreats by binding leaves together, within which they deposit their egg sacs. These retreats are guarded by the mother, and the dense silk construction can persist for extended periods, potentially causing localized tissue necrosis on the leaves used for the shelter.

The economic damage caused by Olios is largely indirect. By gluing leaves together to form shelters, the spiders interfere with leaf gas exchange and photosynthesis, leading to localized plant stress. Furthermore, in high-density populations, their presence can be considered a nuisance, complicating the manual harvesting process and reducing the visual quality of ornamental plants, which may lead to market losses.

Management of Huntsman spiders should focus on integrated pest management (IPM) strategies to maintain balance:

  • Regular orchard and greenhouse sanitation to reduce suitable nesting sites, such as dead bark or leaf litter.
  • Manual removal of spider retreats in high-value ornamental crops to prevent foliage deformation.
  • Optimizing greenhouse environmental conditions, specifically reducing excessive humidity to make habitats less desirable.
  • Preserving natural enemies of the spiders to keep their populations at a naturally low, non-intrusive level.
