Description

Important note: Heterorhabditis bacteriophora is not a plant pest. On the contrary, it is a beneficial entomopathogenic nematode used extensively in organic farming and integrated pest management to control harmful insect larvae living in the soil.

Systematically, this species belongs to the order Rhabditida and the family Heterorhabditidae. These microscopic worms act as highly specialized biological agents that search for host insects within the soil environment, making them a cornerstone of modern eco-friendly agriculture.

The life cycle involves infective juvenile stages that actively quest for host insects. Once a host is located, the nematode enters through natural body openings and releases symbiotic bacteria of the genus Photorhabdus. These bacteria multiply, causing the insect's death, while the nematodes feed on the degraded tissues to complete their development.

This nematode is highly effective against a variety of subterranean pests, including white grubs, vine weevils, wireworms, and various soil-dwelling fly larvae. By targeting the immature stages of these insects, the nematode protects the root systems of numerous crops, preventing severe damage and plant mortality.

For successful application, it is essential to maintain proper soil moisture and monitor temperature conditions, as the nematodes are most active between 15°C and 30°C. They are typically applied via irrigation systems or sprayers, ensuring the ground is moist and protected from direct sunlight to maintain the viability of the beneficial organisms.
