Heterorhabditis megidis is an entomopathogenic nematode belonging to the order Rhabditida and the family Heterorhabditidae. In agricultural practice, it is not considered a plant pest but rather a beneficial organism used as a biological control agent against various soil-borne insect pests.

The biology of Heterorhabditis megidis involves a complex life cycle centered on a symbiotic relationship with Photorhabdus bacteria. The infective juvenile stage (third-stage larva) actively hunts for insect hosts in the soil, entering their bodies through natural openings or the cuticle, subsequently releasing the bacteria to kill the insect.

This nematode targets a wide array of insect pests that damage crop root systems. Notable hosts include various grubs (larvae of Scarabaeidae), weevils, and certain types of cutworms. By infecting these pests, the nematode helps prevent severe damage to crops such as berries, vegetables, and ornamental plants.

The pathogenicity is highly effective, as the symbiotic bacteria convert the host tissue into a nutrient-rich "soup" that supports the rapid reproduction of the nematodes. Within a few days of infection, the host dies, and the nematode population increases significantly before emerging to seek new hosts.

For successful management, application methods focus on soil environmental conditions. Key factors include soil temperature, which should typically range between 12°C and 25°C, and consistent soil moisture. Proper irrigation after application is essential to ensure the nematodes reach the target depth and remain active.
