Description
Hexatylus viviparus is a microscopic nematode belonging to the order Tylenchida and the family Neotylenchidae. This species is known as a specialized mycophagous parasite that feeds exclusively on the cells and mycelial networks of higher fungi.
The primary economic impact of this nematode is observed in mushroom production facilities, particularly with Agaricus species (common button mushrooms). The nematodes use their stylets to puncture fungal cells, draining nutrients and severely inhibiting the growth and yield potential of the mushroom crop.
The biology of Hexatylus viviparus is characterized by a rapid life cycle and viviparous reproduction, allowing the population to explode under favorable conditions. High moisture levels and temperatures between 20°C and 25°C in the growing medium provide the perfect environment for their proliferation.
Damage caused by these nematodes is often invisible until significant yield losses occur. Symptoms include a stunted, thinning mycelium, poor pin-head development, and sometimes the presence of necrotic spots on the mushroom caps, which renders the produce commercially unmarketable.
