Description
Yellow-spotted umber (scientific name: Hibernia bajaria) is a moth species belonging to the Geometridae family. As a significant agricultural pest, it primarily targets deciduous trees and fruit orchards, posing a localized threat to crop development during the early spring growing season.
This species is known to infest a variety of rosaceous plants. Its primary host plants include apple, pear, plum, and cherry trees. Beyond orchards, the moth may also thrive on hawthorn, oak, and various other broad-leaved trees located near agricultural lands, which facilitates the spread of the population.
The life cycle of Hibernia bajaria is distinct, with adults emerging late in the autumn season, typically October and November. A notable biological trait is that females are flightless, requiring them to crawl up tree trunks to reach the canopy. They lay their eggs on twigs and bark crevices, where the eggs remain dormant throughout the winter months.
Upon hatching in the spring, the larvae are highly active and destructive. Their feeding period coincides with the bud-burst phase. Initially, they consume the developing buds, and as the season progresses, they devour the leaves. A heavy infestation can cause severe defoliation, significantly stressing the trees and impacting fruit set and overall plant health.
To manage this pest, growers utilize integrated pest management (IPM) practices. The most common and effective technique is the use of sticky barrier bands applied to the tree trunks in autumn, preventing the flightless females from climbing. In cases of high larval density, chemical control using targeted insecticides should be applied early in the spring, once monitoring indicates that the economic threshold has been reached.
