Description

The mottled umber moth (scientifically known as Erannis defoliaria, formerly classified under Hibernia indocilis) is a prominent member of the Geometridae family. This moth is well-known in silviculture and horticulture for its periodic population explosions, which can cause significant damage to deciduous forest ecosystems across Europe and parts of Asia.

The larvae, or caterpillars, are polyphagous and feed on a wide variety of broad-leaved trees. Major host species include Quercus (oak), Fagus (beech), Betula (birch), and Tilia (lime), as well as many fruit tree species. Their broad host range makes them a persistent threat to both commercial timber production and ornamental urban plantings.

The life cycle is distinctively timed. Adults emerge late in the year, usually between October and December. While males are capable fliers, females are wingless and must crawl up tree trunks to mate and lay their eggs in bark crevices. This late-season behavior is an adaptation that helps them avoid many of the active predators and parasitoids found in warmer months.

Damage occurs in the spring when larvae hatch synchronously with the bud burst of host trees. Initially, they feed on young, tender leaves, but as they grow, they consume entire leaf blades, often leaving only the main veins. Massive outbreaks can defoliate entire forests, causing severe physiological stress and potentially leading to tree mortality if infestations repeat over several years.

Control strategies for this pest focus on preventing female access to the canopy and utilizing biological controls. Sticky bands applied to trunks in autumn are highly effective at trapping wingless females. In large-scale forest management, the timing of insecticide applications is critical, targeting the early larval stages when they are most susceptible to biopesticides.
