Spring usher

Systematic position: The spring usher (Latin: Hibernia leucophaearia) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Geometridae. It is a moth species commonly found in temperate regions, frequently causing issues in woodland areas and adjacent orchards.

Host plants: This insect is a generalist feeder that primarily targets broad-leaved trees. In an agricultural context, it is known to cause damage to oak trees, but it also readily attacks fruit-bearing trees such as apples, pears, and various members of the Prunus genus.

Biology and life cycle: The species is univoltine, meaning it has one generation per year. The moths emerge very early in the year, often between January and March. A distinctive feature is the sexual dimorphism: males are winged and fly, while females are flightless with vestigial wings, necessitating they climb the host tree to oviposit in bark crevices.

Damage and severity: The larvae are the stage responsible for the damage. Upon hatching, they feed on unfolding buds and young leaves. In cases of high infestation, they can cause significant defoliation, skeletonizing the leaves. This defoliation stresses the trees, reduces vigor, and may lead to substantial crop yield losses if left uncontrolled.

Control measures:

• Manual removal of loose bark or scrubbing trunks to eliminate overwintering egg clusters.
• Applying grease bands or sticky traps around tree trunks in early winter to prevent flightless females from ascending to lay eggs.
• Monitoring larval activity to time the application of microbial insecticides like Bacillus thuringiensis.
• Targeted chemical treatments during the early larval development stages if infestation levels are high.
• Encouraging natural predators such as insectivorous birds and parasitic wasps within the garden ecosystem.
