Hieroxestis

Description

Systematic position. The genus Hieroxestis belongs to the order Lepidoptera, family Tineidae (clothes moths and fungus moths). These small moths are primarily known for their larvae, which inhabit various plant parts, often consuming decaying vegetable matter or damaging fresh produce in tropical environments.

Host crops and damage. The species Hieroxestis subcervinella is a significant pest of banana plantations. The larvae feed on the tissues of the fruit, burrowing under the peel or deep into the pulp. This behavior results in premature ripening, rot, and serious cosmetic defects, rendering the produce unsuitable for commercial export.

Biology and lifecycle. The adults are small moths with narrow, elongated wings. Females oviposit on the surface of the fruit. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately begin boring into the plant tissue, creating tunnels. Pupation occurs within silken cocoons constructed either inside the damaged fruit or among debris on the ground.

Economic impact. The primary impact is the direct loss of harvest and reduced quality of fruits. Damaged tissue becomes an entry point for secondary bacterial and fungal infections, which accelerate the decomposition of the fruit bunch. Such infestations can lead to total loss of fruit in affected clusters if not properly managed.

Control measures. Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential. Cultural practices, such as the removal and destruction of infested fruit bunches and plant debris, are the most effective methods to limit population growth. Chemical control using registered insecticides may be necessary during high-pressure periods, and pheromone traps should be used for early monitoring of adult activity.
