Beyond agricultural crops, the insect can survive on various woody hosts, using them as reservoirs to maintain its population during the off-season or when the primary preferred crops are not available in the field.

The biology of Hilda patruelis is characterized by a mutualistic relationship with ants. The ants tend to the insect colonies, providing protection against natural enemies, while the insects provide the ants with honeydew, a carbohydrate-rich excretion.
