Description
Systematic position: Hirsutiella zavchatniki is a member of the order Trombidiformes and the family Trombiculidae. These mites are well-known for their parasitic larval stage, while the adult forms reside in the soil and are typically harmless to plants, feeding on small soil arthropods.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle involves several stages, starting from eggs deposited in the soil. The larvae, also known as chiggers, emerge and climb onto vegetation to wait for a passing host. Once they feed on the host's skin tissue, they drop off and undergo metamorphosis into nymphal and adult stages within the soil layers.
Damage and pest status: They are not considered agricultural plant pests in the traditional sense, but they are significant medical and veterinary pests. Their presence makes outdoor work uncomfortable due to the itchy, inflammatory reactions caused by larval attachment to the skin, a condition known as trombiculiasis.
Protection measures: Managing chigger populations involves habitat modification. Key strategies include:
- removing tall weeds and dense brush that provide shade;
- regular lawn mowing to expose the soil to direct sunlight;
- reducing rodent populations that serve as natural hosts for the larvae;
- using acaricidal treatments in highly infested areas.
Additional notes: Personal protection is the most effective approach for those working in infested areas. Using insect repellents containing DEET or permethrin on clothing, wearing long trousers tucked into socks, and bathing immediately after field work can significantly reduce the risk of chigger bites and associated skin irritation.
