Neoschoengastia

Neoschoengastia is a genus of mites belonging to the family Trombiculidae, order Trombidiformes. Known primarily as chiggers, these mites are characterized by a complex life cycle. While the adult stages live in the soil as predators or scavengers, the larval stage is parasitic, which creates significant challenges for field operations and animal husbandry within agricultural landscapes.

These pests generally infest wild animals, birds, and rodents, but their presence in cultivated land is often linked to poorly managed field borders or areas with dense weed cover. Because they are not strictly crop-destroying phytophages, their primary impact in agriculture is the restriction of land use and the potential health risk posed to livestock and field workers.

The life cycle of Neoschoengastia involves several stages: egg, pre-larva, larva, protonymph, deutonymph, tritonymph, and adult. The larval stage is the most critical for pest control, as it seeks out a host for feeding. After engorgement, the larvae return to the soil to complete their metamorphosis into nymphs and, eventually, adults, depending heavily on soil moisture and temperature.

The damage caused by these mites is primarily environmental and sanitary. In high-density areas, they create significant barriers to agricultural labor, as the larvae can cause irritation and potential disease transmission to both humans and domestic animals. Effectively, they act as an impediment to proper crop maintenance in infested areas.
