Description
Hispa (genus Hispa) belongs to the family Chrysomelidae, specifically within the subfamily Cassidinae. These beetles are notorious pests that affect various agricultural crops, with rice being the most significant host plant in tropical and subtropical farming regions worldwide.
The pest primarily targets monocotyledonous crops, specifically members of the Poaceae family. While rice is the most frequent target, infestations are also commonly found on various wild grasses, which serve as alternative food sources and refuges for the beetle during non-cropping seasons.
The biological cycle of Hispa consists of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Females lay eggs directly into the leaf tissues. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately start feeding by mining the parenchyma of the leaves, creating distinct tunnels that protect them from external threats.
Damage symptoms are characterized by linear, white, or chlorotic streaks on the leaf blades caused by larval mining. Adult beetles, on the other hand, feed externally by scraping the epidermis, leading to leaf skeletonization. Severe infestations can cause significant stunting and yield losses.
