Pear leaf weevil

Homalorhynchites

Description

Systematic position. The pear leaf weevil (Homalorhynchites hungaricus) is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Rhynchitidae. This beetle is a significant pest of fruit trees, particularly affecting pear orchards. Its life cycle is closely linked to the phenology of the host plants, making it a critical focus for orchard pest management programs.

Host plants and damage. The species primarily targets pears but can also be found on apple, cherry, and other rosaceous trees. Adults feed on buds and young leaves, creating small holes. However, the most characteristic damage occurs when the female cuts leaf stalks and rolls the leaves into tight, cigar-shaped structures. These leaf rolls are where the larvae develop, leading to localized tissue necrosis and premature defoliation.

Biology and life cycle. The pest completes one generation per year. Adults overwinter in the soil or beneath leaf litter. When spring temperatures rise, beetles emerge and begin feeding on succulent plant parts. After mating, females create leaf rolls to deposit eggs. Once the larvae finish feeding inside the leaf rolls, they drop to the ground, enter the soil, and pupate, remaining there until the following spring.

Economic impact. Heavy infestations of this weevil cause serious physiological stress to fruit trees. The loss of foliage reduces the tree's photosynthetic capacity, which impacts fruit size, sugar content, and overall yield. Repeated severe infestations over several seasons can weaken the tree, making it more susceptible to other diseases and environmental stressors.

Control measures. Successful management relies on a combination of cultural and chemical interventions:

  • Regular collection and destruction of rolled leaves to prevent larval maturation.
  • Soil cultivation around the base of trees in autumn to disrupt overwintering sites.
  • Application of selective insecticides at the onset of adult activity, typically before blooming.
  • Monitoring pest populations through visual checks to determine the need for intervention based on economic thresholds.
