The cherry fruit sawfly (Hoplocampa cookei) belongs to the order Hymenoptera and the family Tenthredinidae. This insect is a significant specialist pest that primarily targets stone fruit trees, causing substantial losses in both commercial orchards and home gardens.
The primary hosts for this pest include species within the Prunus genus, most notably cherries and sweet cherries. The larvae are particularly dangerous because they develop inside the young fruit, where they remain sheltered from many external environmental factors and some pesticides.
The lifecycle of the cherry fruit sawfly is highly synchronized with the flowering period of host trees. Adults emerge in early spring, precisely when the buds begin to swell.
