The pear sawfly (Hoplocampa pyricola) is a significant insect pest belonging to the order Hymenoptera and the family Tenthredinidae. It is a highly specialized species that primarily targets pear trees, causing substantial economic losses in both commercial orchards and home fruit gardens.
The pest exclusively infests pear crops. The larvae cause direct damage to the developing fruitlets, which can lead to premature fruit drop and significant reduction in marketable yield. Their host specificity makes them a predictable but persistent threat that requires constant monitoring during the bloom period.
The biological cycle of this pest is univoltine, meaning it has one generation per year. The insect overwinters as a larva in a cocoon deep within the soil. Pupation occurs in early spring, and adult emergence typically coincides with the flowering stage of pear trees, allowing females to deposit eggs directly into the sepals of the blossoms.
The damage is caused by the larvae, which bore into the fruitlets immediately after hatching. They consume the core and seeds, often moving between multiple fruits. Signs of infestation include characteristic holes in the small fruits and the presence of frass. Affected fruits eventually wither, blacken, and drop to the ground, causing severe crop depletion.
Management strategies focus on a combination of cultural and chemical interventions. Cultivation of the soil under the tree canopy in late autumn can disrupt the overwintering population of the larvae. Chemical control should be timed precisely to coincide with the end of the blossom period, specifically targeting the larvae before they penetrate the fruit, using effective insecticides approved for fruit protection.
