Systematic position: The lance nematode (Hoplolaimus galeatus) is classified within the order Tylenchida and the family Hoplolaimidae. It is recognized as one of the most destructive soil-borne pests, significantly impacting agricultural productivity and forest health through root tissue destruction.

Host range: This nematode is highly polyphagous, attacking a vast array of plant species. Common hosts include major agronomic crops like corn, soybeans, cotton, and various types of grasses. In addition, it causes severe damage to nursery stocks, ornamental plants, and tree species such as pines and oaks, making it a threat to both agriculture and landscaping.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle consists of egg, four larval stages, and adult stages. As a semi-endoparasite, H. galeatus is capable of feeding on both the interior and exterior of root systems. Its development is highly dependent on soil moisture and temperature, with optimal conditions enabling rapid population growth throughout the growing season.
