Description

Hoplolaimus magnistylus is a significant phytoparasitic nematode belonging to the order Tylenchida and the family Hoplolaimidae. Known as a lance nematode, it is characterized by a robust, well-developed stylet, which is specialized for piercing plant cell walls and extracting cytoplasm from root cortex cells.

This pest affects a wide range of host plants, particularly field crops such as corn, cotton, various legumes, and several grass species. It is a migratory endoparasite, meaning it constantly moves through the soil profile and enters or exits root tissues to feed, which enhances its potential for widespread damage across a field.

The biological cycle of this nematode is completed primarily in the soil and root interface. Adult females deposit eggs either in the soil or within root tissues. The life stages include multiple molts, and both juveniles and adults are capable of feeding, resulting in a continuous threat to the plant throughout the entire growing season.

The damage caused by Hoplolaimus magnistylus manifests as stunted plant growth, chlorosis, and wilting, often mimicking symptoms of nutrient deficiency or drought stress. The root system suffers from severe necrosis, lesions, and reduced branching, which compromises the plant's ability to absorb water and essential mineral nutrients effectively.
