Hoplolaimus tylenchiformis is a significant plant-parasitic nematode belonging to the order Tylenchida and the family Hoplolaimidae. Commonly known as a lance nematode, it acts as a semi-endoparasite, capable of migrating within the soil and penetrating deeply into the root cortex to feed on plant tissues.

This pest has a wide host range, attacking various agricultural and horticultural crops, including corn, soybeans, cotton, and ornamental shrubs. It thrives particularly well in light-textured, sandy soils, which facilitate its movement and allow for rapid population growth and expansion across fields.

The life cycle consists of egg, four juvenile stages, and adult stages. Using its robust stylet, the nematode punctures plant cells to extract cytoplasmic contents. During its development, it can move in and out of the roots, causing mechanical damage and introducing opportunistic pathogens that further complicate the plant's health status.

Damage caused by this nematode is characterized by the destruction of root hairs, severe lesion formation, and stunted plant growth.
