Description

The genus Hyblaea belongs to the order Lepidoptera, classified within its own family, Hyblaeidae. The most economically damaging species is Hyblaea puera, commonly known as the teak defoliator. This moth is a major agricultural and forestry pest, particularly in tropical regions where it causes significant damage to woody plants by consuming foliage.

Target crops primarily include the teak tree (Tectona grandis), but the larvae are known to infest various other plant species across different tropical families. By consuming large amounts of leaf tissue, the caterpillars cause severe defoliation, which hampers the physiological development of the trees and leads to significant losses in timber production and plantation yields.

The life cycle of Hyblaea follows a typical holometabolous pattern: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females lay eggs on the leaves of host plants, and the emerging larvae progress through five developmental instars. The duration of the life cycle varies depending on environmental conditions, typically spanning about three to four weeks, allowing for multiple overlapping generations per year.

The damage caused by these insects is characterized by skeletonization and total defoliation of leaves. Caterpillars of early instars feed on the epidermis, while older larvae consume the entire leaf lamina, often tying leaves together with silk to create a protected shelter. This defoliation reduces the photosynthetic capacity of the plants, weakening them and making them susceptible to secondary pests and diseases.
