Description

The teak defoliator (Hyblaea puera) is a moth species belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Hyblaeidae. It is widely recognized as one of the most destructive pests for teak (Tectona grandis) plantations across the tropical regions of Asia, Africa, and the Pacific.

The primary host for this insect is the teak tree. While it shows a strong preference for teak, the larvae can also feed on a limited range of alternative hosts, which supports their survival and population persistence during periods when teak foliage is less abundant.

The life cycle of Hyblaea puera is characterized by a rapid development process. Under favorable conditions, the total life span from egg to adult is approximately 20–30 days. This short duration allows for multiple overlapping generations within a single growing season, leading to sudden population explosions.

The damage caused by this pest is primarily defoliation. Early instar larvae skeletonize the leaves by consuming the chlorophyll-rich tissue between veins, while later instars consume entire leaf blades. This massive loss of foliage severely impacts the tree's physiological processes, leading to reduced wood quality and volume growth.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies are essential for controlling the teak defoliator. These include the application of biopesticides, such as Nucleopolyhedrovirus (NPV) or Bacillus thuringiensis, the implementation of pheromone traps for monitoring and mass trapping, and the promotion of natural predators and parasitoids within the plantation ecosystem.
