Hydrobia ulvae is a small prosobranch gastropod mollusk within the family Hydrobiidae. While primarily recognized as a marine and estuarine species, these snails can occasionally impact agricultural areas when coastal flooding or irrigation with brackish water allows them to colonize low-lying fields and affect young crop growth.

Taxonomically, this species is classified under the order Littorinimorpha. They are characterized by their small, conical shells, usually measuring between 3 to 6 millimeters in height. These mollusks are remarkably hardy, capable of surviving in various salinity levels, which allows them to thrive in intertidal environments and potentially move into cultivated zones during high tide events.

The life cycle of Hydrobia ulvae is highly adaptive to the water conditions of the estuary. Females deposit egg capsules on hard substrates or plant remains. The snails primarily feed on detritus, diatoms, and surface algae. However, when concentrated on young plants in flooded fields, they switch to grazing on the epidermis of tender stalks and leaves.

The damage caused by these mollusks involves the intensive scraping of plant tissues. This physical damage weakens young seedlings and creates open wounds that are highly susceptible to fungal and bacterial infections. In severe cases, high concentrations of these snails can lead to significant biomass loss in forage crops or vegetables grown in coastal regions.
