Systematic position: The New Zealand mud snail (Potamopyrgus antipodarum) is classified within the order Littorinimorpha and the family Tateidae. This small, freshwater gastropod mollusk is recognized globally as a highly invasive species due to its resilience and rapid colonization capabilities in various aquatic environments.

Affected crops and facilities: While it does not directly consume crops, it poses a significant threat to agricultural infrastructure. It primarily affects hydroponic systems, aquaponics, irrigation channels, and rice fields. The snail can clog essential water delivery systems, causing water supply failures that affect plant productivity.

Biology and life cycle: The species is famous for its asexual reproduction via parthenogenesis, where populations are composed almost entirely of females. A single individual can initiate a massive infestation. These snails are highly adaptable to various water temperatures, salinity levels, and oxygen concentrations, making them nearly impossible to eradicate once established.

Nature of damage and pest status: The primary harm stems from the snail's ability to form dense populations, often exceeding hundreds of thousands per square meter. These dense mats clog water filters, pumps, and pipes. In hydroponic setups, their waste products alter water chemistry, which can disrupt nutrient delivery and cause stress to the roots of the crops being cultivated.
