Hydrochoerus

Description

The capybara (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris) is a member of the Rodentia order and the Caviidae family. As the largest living rodent, it is typically semi-aquatic. In agricultural landscapes, particularly in South America, capybaras frequently encroach upon farmland, acting as significant pests that exploit easily accessible food sources.

Capybaras possess a specialized diet consisting of grasses and aquatic vegetation, yet they readily transition to crops when natural resources are depleted or when cultivated crops are more nutritious. Their primary targets include rice paddies, sugarcane plantations, maize fields, and young vegetable crops, causing substantial economic losses in agricultural regions.

The biology of the capybara is defined by a high reproductive potential and a gregarious lifestyle. Living in large, structured social groups, they can rapidly colonize areas adjacent to irrigation systems. Their opportunistic feeding behavior ensures that they can survive in diverse environments, often making them resilient to minor efforts intended to drive them away from commercial fields.

Damage caused by capybaras is twofold: direct consumption and trampling. Being heavy animals, their movement through fields results in significant destruction of tender plants. Furthermore, their feeding habits often leave irregular patches of damaged crops, which can be easily identified by the distinct tooth marks left on the stalks and stems of the affected plants.

Effective management and protection of crops against capybara invasion involve several integrated practices:

  • Installation of reinforced perimeter fencing to prevent entry.
  • Implementation of electric fencing systems to deter large rodents.
  • Strategic removal of dense vegetation around water sources to reduce hiding spots.
  • Deployment of motion-activated sensors and deterrent devices to discourage browsing.
