The capybara (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris) is the largest living rodent in the world, belonging to the order Rodentia and the family Hydrochoeridae. While often viewed as an iconic South American animal, it is increasingly recognized as a significant agricultural pest capable of devastating large-scale crop production in riparian zones.
The diet of the capybara is primarily herbivorous, consisting of aquatic vegetation and grasses. However, when faced with high-quality agricultural crops, they demonstrate a marked preference for rice paddies, sugarcane fields, corn, and melon patches. Their grazing behavior is highly efficient, allowing them to strip fields of young seedlings in a matter of nights.
The biology of this species is centered around their semi-aquatic lifestyle, which dictates their distribution in agroecosystems. Capybaras live in social groups, and their rapid maturation rate contributes to high population densities near irrigation canals. These habitats provide ideal conditions for breeding, leading to increased pressure on neighboring fields throughout the growing season.
The damage caused by capybaras is twofold: direct consumption of plant material and mechanical destruction caused by trampling. As these animals move in groups, their weight and activity crush fragile crops, leading to significant yield losses. Farmers often observe irregular patches of destroyed crops, which serve as clear indicators of capybara feeding activity in the area.
Effective management strategies require a combination of non-lethal and exclusionary measures. Electric fencing is considered the most reliable method for keeping capybaras out of high-value fields. Other strategies include the installation of motion-activated lighting, noise deterrents, and strategic landscape management to reduce vegetation cover near field borders, making the area less attractive for the animals to congregate.
