The Squeak beetle (genus Hygrobia) belongs to the family Hygrobiidae. While these insects are primarily aquatic, they are often encountered by farmers and agronomists near irrigation ponds, canal systems, and reservoirs that serve agricultural fields, making them a subject of interest in water management practices.

Taxonomically, they are categorized within the suborder Adephaga. These beetles are unique due to their ability to produce sound by rubbing their abdomen against their wings, a behavior that gives them their common name. They are not classic pests of crops, but they can be a nuisance in managed water systems used for crop irrigation.

The life cycle consists of distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The larvae are predatory, hunting small invertebrates in the sediment of ponds. Because they rely on aquatic ecosystems, their population dynamics are closely linked to the cleanliness and oxygen levels of the water source used for field irrigation.

The impact of Hygrobia is mainly associated with potential damage to water-based crops or interference with delicate irrigation equipment. Excessive populations may signal degraded water quality, which indirectly affects the health of crops receiving this water. They do not typically feed on standard terrestrial agricultural plants.
