Screech Beetle

Hygrobia hermanni, commonly known as the screech beetle, is a distinct member of the family Hygrobiidae. This coleopteran species is adapted to freshwater environments, primarily inhabiting stagnant or slow-moving water bodies with muddy substrates. It is scientifically significant due to its unique stridulatory apparatus used for defense.

The biology of the screech beetle involves a complex life cycle. Eggs are deposited on aquatic vegetation, and the larvae are primarily carnivorous, hunting small aquatic invertebrates in the benthic zone. As the larvae develop, they require specific environmental conditions, and their presence is often indicative of the ecological status of the pond or water feature.
