Hylaea

The genus Hylaea belongs to the family Geometridae, order Lepidoptera. These insects are known in agricultural and forestry contexts as leaf-eating pests. Understanding their classification is essential for professional scouting and developing effective integrated pest management (IPM) programs in local environments.

The primary hosts for these insects include various broad-leaved trees and occasionally fruit crops. The larvae cause severe defoliation as they feed on foliage, which significantly stresses the plants. In severe cases, high infestation levels can compromise the structural integrity of the plant or significantly reduce future crop yields.

The biological cycle follows a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa, and adult moth. The larvae are typically active during late spring and early summer. The timing of their appearance is highly dependent on the cumulative heat units and environmental factors, which dictates the windows for monitoring and intervention.

Damage is characterized by irregular leaf margins or skeletonization of the foliage. The pest's harmfulness is measured by the percentage of leaf area loss, which leads to reduced nutrient synthesis. Beyond immediate damage, these pests can weaken trees, making them susceptible to other secondary wood-boring insects and fungal pathogens.

Control measures should be preventive and reactive. Effective methods include using pheromone traps to monitor adult flight, applying microbial insecticides such as Bacillus thuringiensis during the early larval stages, and maintaining tree vigor to help them withstand damage. Chemical insecticides should be used as a last resort during high outbreaks.
