Pine carpet moth

The pine carpet moth (Hylaea fasciaria) is a species of moth belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Geometridae. It is recognized as a forest pest primarily found in pine-dominated ecosystems, where its larval stage can cause significant damage by defoliating coniferous trees during population outbreaks.

The primary host for this insect is the Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris), although it may occasionally feed on spruce needles. The larvae are particularly damaging to young stands, as they consume the pine needles, which can severely impact tree health and growth vigor when infestation densities are high.

The life cycle of this species typically consists of one generation per year. The insect overwinters as a young larva, typically tucked away within bark crevices or near the base of needles to survive low winter temperatures. As spring progresses, the larvae resume feeding, developing through several instars before pupation occurs in late spring or early summer.

Larval feeding results in skeletonized or missing needles, giving the tree canopy a sparse or ragged appearance. This widespread loss of foliage reduces the tree's photosynthetic capacity, causing stress that makes the conifers susceptible to secondary infestations by bark beetles and wood-boring insects, potentially leading to tree mortality.

Control strategies for the pine carpet moth focus on forest health management and targeted interventions. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices are encouraged, including the preservation of natural predators like birds and parasitic wasps that regulate moth populations. In nursery or high-value forest settings, the application of biological insecticides or selective chemical treatments during the early larval stage is considered the most effective intervention.
