Description
The green cloverworm (Hypena scabra) is a moth species belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Erebidae. It is a well-known agricultural pest primarily recognized for its tendency to feed on soybean crops, often causing significant foliage loss in fields across North America.
While soybeans are the primary host, this pest also targets various legumes, including clover and alfalfa. The moth is widely distributed, and its larvae thrive in fields where vegetation provides sufficient food sources and protection. The pest has a high reproductive capacity, which can lead to rapid population spikes under favorable climatic conditions.
The life cycle follows a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The adult moths are nocturnal, whereas the larvae are most active during the day but prefer the cooler, shaded underside of leaves. Larval development occurs through several instars, with each stage requiring progressively larger amounts of plant tissue for growth.
Damage to the plant is characterized by irregular holes in the foliage, often progressing to severe defoliation if the population density is high. The larvae typically consume leaf tissue between the major veins. Such damage compromises the plant's photosynthetic efficiency, significantly reducing pod filling and final grain weight.
Effective management requires scouting fields regularly to assess the larval population relative to economic thresholds. Chemical control involves the timely application of approved insecticides. Additionally, integrated pest management practices, such as encouraging natural predators and parasites, are essential for keeping populations below levels that require costly chemical interventions.
