Systematic position: Icaricia icarioides (synonym Plebejus icarioides), commonly known as Boisduval's Blue, is a species of butterfly in the family Lycaenidae, belonging to the order Lepidoptera. While primarily studied for its ecological role, it can occasionally exhibit pest behavior in agricultural settings, particularly where legumes are cultivated for fodder or commercial seed production.

Affected crops: The primary host plants for this species are members of the genus Lupinus. In agricultural landscapes, the larvae may also infest various perennial forage legumes. High populations of the butterfly can cause localized outbreaks that affect the overall vigor and productivity of the legume stands.

Biology and life cycle: This insect undergoes complete metamorphosis, consisting of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. The female butterflies deposit eggs on the foliage of host plants. The larvae possess a specialized relationship with ants (myrmecophily), which provide them with protection from predators. The larvae typically emerge and feed during the most active growth phases of the host plants.

Damage and economic impact: The larval stage causes the most significant damage by consuming leaf tissue, flower buds, and developing pods. By damaging the reproductive parts of the plant, the caterpillars directly reduce the potential seed yield. Furthermore, heavy defoliation disrupts the photosynthetic capacity of the plants, leading to stunted growth and reduced crop quality.
