The genus Idaea is a diverse group of moths belonging to the family Geometridae. These insects are commonly referred to as wave moths. The host range of Idaea larvae is quite broad, often including leafy vegetables, garden flowers, and greenhouse plants. They typically feed by chewing holes in leaves or stripping the soft tissue, which can stress the plant and reduce its aesthetic or commercial value. In agricultural settings, they are occasionally classified as secondary pests that require monitoring.

The life cycle of these moths usually involves several generations per year depending on the climate. The larvae are the primary damaging stage. They often overwinter as partly grown larvae in protected areas such as plant debris or the upper layer of soil, resuming their feeding activity as soon as temperatures rise in the spring.

Damage symptoms include irregular leaf margins and skeletonized foliage. Because the larvae are often cryptically colored and nocturnal, they can go unnoticed until significant foliage loss has occurred. Monitoring for adult moth activity through light traps can help predict potential outbreaks and determine the timing for intervention.

Management strategies focus on cultural and chemical control. Maintaining clean fields by removing plant residues and controlling weeds is essential to reduce overwintering sites. If threshold levels are exceeded, biological controls like Bacillus thuringiensis or targeted low-toxicity insecticides are effective in managing populations while minimizing harm to beneficial insects.
