Description
The genus Involvulus belongs to the family Attelabidae, commonly known as leaf-rolling weevils, within the order Coleoptera. These insects are distinguished by the unique biological behavior of females, which meticulously roll leaves into tight, cigar-shaped structures for oviposition.
These weevils primarily target fruit trees, including apple, pear, plum, and cherry, as well as various nut trees and ornamental shrubs. They are considered secondary pests, but their localized impact on foliage can be significant in home orchards and nurseries.
The life cycle undergoes complete metamorphosis. Adult weevils overwinter in the soil or under leaf litter. Upon emergence in the spring, they feed on buds and young shoots before mating. The female then carefully rolls a leaf to create a nursery for her eggs, which hatch into larvae that feed on the decaying leaf tissue.
Damage is characterized by the presence of twisted, blackened leaves that eventually fall off. The larvae feed inside these rolled structures, causing the foliage to wither and preventing the tree from photosynthesizing effectively. Severe infestations can cause leaf drop and stunt overall plant vigor.
