Lead-colored weevil

Involvulus plumbeus

Description

Systematic position. The lead-colored weevil (Involvulus plumbeus) is a member of the family Rhynchitidae, order Coleoptera. This small beetle, often referred to as a leaf-roller, is a significant pest primarily known for its impact on grapevines, where it employs unique strategies for larval protection.

Host plants and damage. The primary host for this pest is the grapevine. Adult weevils feed on developing buds, tender leaves, and flower clusters. The most distinctive characteristic of this beetle is the behavior of the female, which rolls leaves into tight, cigar-shaped tubes, inside which it deposits eggs to ensure a protected food source for the hatching larvae.

Biology and lifecycle. The species overwinters as an adult within the soil or beneath leaf litter. Activity commences in early spring as temperatures rise, leading to emergence and feeding. The lifecycle includes egg, larval, and pupal stages, with pupation typically occurring underground. Understanding these timings is crucial for timing agricultural interventions effectively.

Economic impact. The damage caused by the lead-colored weevil can be severe, especially in young vineyards. Feeding damage on buds can prevent normal shoot growth, while the systematic rolling of leaves reduces the plant's total photosynthetic area. Destruction of inflorescences leads to direct yield losses, potentially compromising the overall vitality of the vineyard if infestations remain unchecked.

Control measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this weevil effectively:

  • Tillage of the soil beneath vines during autumn and spring to disturb overwintering sites.
  • Manual removal and destruction of the characteristic rolled leaf tubes to limit the population cycle.
  • Application of systemic or contact insecticides during the peak activity period before fruit set.
  • Encouraging natural predators and avoiding unnecessary broad-spectrum pesticide applications to preserve ecosystem balance.
