The Iris fly (Chyliza iris) is a significant pest belonging to the order Diptera and the family Psilidae. This insect specializes in attacking the Iris genus, posing a serious threat to the vitality and aesthetic value of ornamental iris plantings in various regions across the globe.
The primary host plants are species and cultivars of the Iris genus, with a particular preference for tall bearded irises. The fly is most active during the early stages of spring growth, matching the timing of the plant's flower stalk elongation and subsequent bud formation.
The life cycle of the iris fly is closely synchronized with the phenology of its host. The pest overwinters in the pupal stage, typically residing in the soil or among dormant organic debris near the plants. As temperatures rise in spring, adult flies emerge, mate, and deposit eggs on the developing buds or within the leaf axils of the iris plant.
Damage occurs when the hatching larvae bore into the soft tissues of the bud and flower stalk. This leads to the characteristic symptoms of stunted growth, internal browning, and the eventual decay of the flower bud, which fails to bloom. The economic and aesthetic impact is severe, as the entire season's floral display on affected plants is often ruined by the larvae's feeding activity.
Effective management requires a combination of sanitation and chemical interventions. Gardeners should strictly monitor plants during the bud development stage and remove any suspicious buds immediately. Soil cultivation in the autumn helps disrupt the overwintering pupae, while systemic insecticides applied early in the season can prevent the flies from laying eggs or neutralize larvae before they enter the plant tissues.
