Description
The genus Orthodera belongs to the order Mantodea and the family Mantidae. While many mantids are traditionally viewed as beneficial predators, specific species within the Orthodera genus can become problematic in gardens and agricultural settings, especially when feeding on tender plant parts or young sprouts.
These insects affect a variety of crops, including vegetables, fruit trees, and ornamental plants. Their feeding activity is often concentrated on soft foliage, buds, and terminal shoots, which can lead to stunted growth and reduced aesthetic value in ornamental nursery stocks.
The biological cycle of Orthodera consists of three stages: egg, nymph, and adult. Adults are typically green and well-camouflaged, allowing them to blend into the foliage. The main impact of this pest is the physiological stress it causes to young plants, potentially making them more susceptible to pathogens and environmental stress, ultimately leading to reduced harvest quality.
Effective control measures include physical removal of oothecae during the dormant season and manual monitoring of plants. Maintaining a clean garden environment by removing weeds that serve as alternate hosts is crucial. In high-pressure scenarios, soft chemical interventions or botanical insecticides may be used to reduce populations while minimizing impact on beneficial predatory species.
