Green springtail

Systematic position: The green springtail (Isotoma viridis) belongs to the class of hexapods, order Collembola, and the family Isotomidae. It is one of the most widespread representatives of soil fauna, commonly found across temperate and arctic regions, occupying diverse soil environments.

Crops damaged: While primarily a saprophage, Isotoma viridis can shift to feeding on young plant tissues when population densities are high. It poses a significant threat to vegetable crop seedlings, cereal sprouts, greenhouse plantings, and ornamental seedlings, particularly in soils with high moisture content.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle of this springtail includes several molts. These organisms are moisture-loving and thrive in organic-rich soils. Reproduction occurs in soil horizons where both larvae and adults feed on decaying organic matter, fungal spores, and microorganisms; however, when food sources are scarce, they begin to consume tender root systems and cotyledon leaves of plants.

Character of damage and harmfulness: The primary damage occurs during the seedling emergence stage. These pests gnaw on the epidermis of young plants, leading to stunted growth, wilting, and often the complete destruction of seedlings. Due to their microscopic size, their presence is often detected only after the root system has already suffered significant damage.

Protection measures: Management of Isotoma viridis focuses on regulating substrate moisture and implementing proper agronomic practices. Recommended actions include:

• Ensuring proper drainage and avoiding waterlogging in greenhouses and nurseries.
• Following crop rotation and thorough soil cultivation to disrupt pest nesting sites.
• Applying biological control agents, such as entomopathogenic fungi.
• Using contact or systemic insecticides if the population density reaches economic threshold levels.
