Isotomurus is a genus within the family Isotomidae, belonging to the order Collembola. These tiny hexapods, commonly referred to as springtails, are ubiquitous in moist soil environments, particularly where organic matter is decomposing. They serve as opportunistic feeders that can become pests in horticultural settings.

These pests primarily target tender plant tissues, including young seedlings, root systems, and mushroom mycelia. They are particularly problematic in greenhouse environments where high humidity levels and constantly moist growing media provide ideal conditions for their rapid proliferation and survival.

The biology of Isotomurus is characterized by high reproductive rates in moisture-rich environments. They undergo incomplete metamorphosis, and unlike most other insects, they continue to molt throughout their adult stage. They are highly mobile creatures, capable of jumping significant distances using a specialized organ known as the furcula.

The damage caused by Isotomurus includes the consumption of root hairs, tender stems, and cotyledons. This feeding activity creates entry points for soil-borne pathogens, leading to stunted growth, yellowing, and death of seedlings. In high-density populations, the cumulative feeding damage can decimate a seedling tray within days.
