Issus

Issus is a genus of insects within the Issidae family, belonging to the order Hemiptera. These planthoppers are characterized by their jumping ability and specialized morphology, which allows them to blend into the woody parts of plants. While they are often considered minor pests, localized outbreaks can significantly impact the health of vineyards and orchard trees.

The life cycle of the Issus includes several nymphal stages that feed on plant sap. Typically, the insect overwinters as eggs or nymphs hidden within crevices of tree bark or under thick leaf mulch. As temperatures rise in spring, the nymphs become active, concentrating their feeding on tender young shoots and leaves, which can lead to structural damage over time.

Crops most susceptible to infestation include grapevines, various pome and stone fruits, and several ornamental woody species. By using their piercing-sucking mouthparts, these insects remove essential nutrients and fluids from the plant tissues. This constant feeding stress can lead to stunted growth, leaf chlorosis, and a decrease in overall yield quality.

The severity of damage is often exacerbated by the indirect effects of feeding. The secretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which blocks sunlight from the leaf surface, further inhibiting photosynthesis. Additionally, like many other hemipterans, Issus may play a role in transmitting various plant pathogens during their feeding process.
