Itoplectis alternans

Itoplectis alternans is a parasitoid wasp belonging to the family Ichneumonidae (order Hymenoptera). While many ichneumonids are viewed as beneficial for controlling pest populations, Itoplectis alternans acts as a secondary parasite (hyperparasitoid), often targeting beneficial insects that act as primary agents of biological control.

This insect does not directly feed on agricultural crops or ornamental plants. Its economic impact is indirect, as it disrupts the balance of local ecosystems by preying upon the pupae of beneficial species, specifically those that naturally control the populations of moths, caterpillars, and leaf rollers in gardens and forests.

The life cycle involves a complete metamorphosis. The adult female locates the pupa of a host, using her ovipositor to pierce the outer shell and deposit an egg inside. The developing larva feeds on the tissues of the host, eventually consuming it completely and emerging as an adult, effectively killing the beneficial insect from within.

The primary damage caused by this species is the reduction of natural pest control services. By killing predators and primary parasitoids that would otherwise manage pest outbreaks, Itoplectis alternans can cause an unintended increase in the population density of primary agricultural pests, such as orchard leaf rollers.
