Systematic position: The hedgehog tick (Ixodes hexagonus) belongs to the order Ixodida (Ixodid ticks), family Ixodidae. It is a well-known ectoparasite that exhibits a distinct preference for residing in the nests or burrows of its mammalian hosts.
It is crucial to clarify that the hedgehog tick is not a plant pest. It does not feed on plant tissues, does not damage crops, and plays no role in the destruction of agricultural yields. Its biological existence is entirely dependent on blood-feeding from animals, rendering it irrelevant to crop protection strategies.
Biology and life cycle: The species follows a typical four-stage developmental cycle: egg, larva, nymph, and adult. Unlike pasture ticks that quest on vegetation, Ixodes hexagonus is a nidicolous parasite. It spends the majority of its life within the burrows of animals like hedgehogs, foxes, badgers, or in the sleeping areas of domestic pets.
