Jankowskia

Systematic position. The genus Jankowskia belongs to the family Geometridae (inchworms or loopers) within the order Lepidoptera. These moths are recognized for their larval stage, which acts as a primary defoliator for various deciduous tree species, impacting both forest ecosystems and urban plantations.

Host plants. The caterpillars of Jankowskia primarily feed on foliage of broadleaf trees, specifically species within the Fagaceae and Betulaceae families. Oaks, hornbeams, and birches are the most common hosts, where the larvae can be found grazing during the peak vegetative season of the trees.

Biology and life cycle. Like most geometrids, Jankowskia undergoes a complete metamorphosis. They typically overwinter as pupae in the soil or leaf litter. Adult moths emerge in the spring to mate and lay eggs on host foliage. The larvae, known for their distinct "looping" locomotion, feed actively until reaching maturity, after which they descend to pupate.

Damage and economic impact. The primary damage is caused by the caterpillars consuming leaves. Early instar larvae skeletonize the leaf surface, while older larvae consume the entire leaf blade, leaving only the midribs and main veins. Large infestations lead to severe defoliation, which causes physiological stress to the tree, reducing growth rates and vigor.

Protection measures. Management strategies involve monitoring population levels and utilizing natural biological controls whenever possible, such as predatory birds and parasitic wasps. In severe cases, where thresholds of economic damage are reached, target-specific insecticides or biological control agents (such as Bacillus thuringiensis) are applied to mitigate population growth.
