Emerald moth

Systematic position. The Emerald moth (genus Jodis) is classified within the Geometridae family, belonging to the order Lepidoptera. These moths are widely distributed and are known for their distinct morphology, which allows them to camouflage effectively against green foliage, making them often difficult to detect during early infestation stages.

Host plants. This pest primarily targets various woody plants, trees, and shrubs. In agricultural and horticultural settings, it is known to cause damage to fruit trees and ornamental species. Its presence can be particularly problematic in nurseries where leaf damage significantly affects the marketability of young saplings.

Biology and life cycle. The species undergoes a complete metamorphosis involving the egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa, and adult stages. The larvae are the main destructive stage, feeding primarily on the leaves of host plants. The life cycle length varies depending on local environmental factors such as temperature and humidity, which dictate the number of generations per year.

Damage and economic impact. Larval feeding behavior involves consuming leaf tissue, often leading to skeletonized leaves or complete defoliation if left untreated. Such damage reduces the plant's capacity for photosynthesis, leading to reduced vigor, impaired fruit development, and, in severe cases, the death of young or stressed plants.

This includes monitoring the onset of adult flights and applying targeted treatments during the vulnerable larval stages.
