Description
The black-legged tortoise beetle (Jonthonota nigripes) is a member of the leaf beetle family (Chrysomelidae), order Coleoptera. This species is easily identified by its distinctive flattened, shield-like shape, which is a common characteristic among members of the Cassidinae subfamily, allowing it to blend in with the leaves it consumes.
This beetle primarily feeds on plants belonging to the Convolvulaceae family, most notably bindweed (Convolvulus arvensis). In agricultural contexts, it is recognized as a potential pest for crops within this family, including sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas), where it can cause significant foliage damage if not managed properly.
The life cycle of Jonthonota nigripes consists of complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Adults typically overwinter in soil debris or protected areas and emerge in the spring to feed and mate. Females lay eggs on host plant leaves, and the resulting larvae undergo several instars before pupating on the host foliage.
Both the larvae and adult beetles cause damage by feeding on the leaves. They typically chew holes through the foliage or skeletonize the leaves, leaving behind the midribs and major veins. Extensive defoliation can reduce the photosynthetic capacity of the plants, ultimately resulting in diminished crop yield and plant vigor.
