The pea thrips (Kakothrips pisivorus) belongs to the order Thysanoptera and the family Thripidae. This insect is a significant specialist pest known to target various legume species, often causing widespread damage in agricultural areas where peas and related crops are cultivated.
The host range for this pest primarily includes the common pea, although it frequently infests lentils, beans, and vetches. The adults and larvae prefer to feed on the tender, developing tissues of the plants, which are crucial for the reproductive development of the crop.
The life cycle involves several stages: egg, larva, prepupa, pupa, and adult. The insect typically overwinters as a second-instar larva in the soil at depths of up to 20 centimeters. During the spring, as temperatures rise, the larvae migrate toward the surface to pupate. The species generally completes one generation per year, with the emergence of adults coinciding with the flowering phase of the host plants.
The damage caused by pea thrips is manifested by tissue desiccation and deformation. As they pierce the plant cells to feed on sap, silvering and necrotic lesions appear on leaves and pods. Severe infestations result in flower abortion, pod shriveling, and significant yield losses, as well as a reduction in the quality of the harvested grain.
Effective management requires an integrated approach to minimize population growth. Essential practices include:
- Crop rotation to reduce localized pest density.
- Deep autumn plowing to disturb overwintering larvae in the soil.
