Scaly leg mite

Knemidokoptes mutans

Description

Knemidokoptes mutans is a microscopic parasitic mite belonging to the order Acariformes and the family Knemidokoptidae. This pest is a specialized ectoparasite that infests various bird species, causing a condition widely known as scaly leg or knemidocoptiasis.

The primary hosts for this mite are poultry, particularly chickens and turkeys, although it can also affect pheasants and various ornamental birds. The mites typically congregate in the non-feathered skin regions, specifically on the shanks, toes, and occasionally on the beak and cere area.

The life cycle of the mite is entirely host-dependent and takes approximately 3 to 4 weeks to complete. The female mite burrows deep into the stratum corneum of the skin to lay her eggs. The larvae pass through nymphal stages before maturing into adults, constantly expanding the tunnels under the host's scales.

The pathological impact is characterized by chronic inflammation and hyperkeratosis. As the mites tunnel, they trigger an immune response leading to the buildup of greyish, crusty scales. If left untreated, this results in severe deformity of the legs, lameness, and a significant decrease in the bird's overall health and productivity.

Management strategies require both direct treatment of the birds and strict hygiene protocols. Effective measures include the application of miticidal ointments, ivermectin-based treatments, and deep cleaning of the coop to eradicate environmental reservoirs. Consistent monitoring is essential to prevent rapid spread across the flock.
