Depluming mite

The depluming mite (Neocnemidocoptes gallinae) is an ectoparasitic mite belonging to the order Sarcoptiformes and the family Knemidocoptidae. While not a plant pest, it is a significant veterinary issue in the poultry industry. It specifically targets domestic and wild birds, burrowing into the skin near the feather shafts to feed on tissue fluids and debris.

This mite infests various poultry species, including chickens, turkeys, and pheasants. The economic impact is significant, as infestations lead to poor feather quality, reduced egg production, and overall stress in the flock. The biology of Neocnemidocoptes gallinae is characterized by an entire life cycle occurring on the host. Females lay eggs within the tunnels they create in the bird's epidermis. Transmission is primarily horizontal, occurring through direct physical contact between birds in the same housing environment.

Damage caused by the mite is marked by intense pruritus (itching). Birds often engage in self-mutilation and feather-picking, leading to widespread feather loss, also known as depluming. Visible skin lesions may include crusting, inflammation, and thickened skin areas. Chronic cases lead to severe weight loss and a decrease in the general resistance of the birds to secondary health complications.

Control strategies for this mite require rigorous sanitary practices and the use of approved acaricides. Effective management involves both direct treatment of the birds and environmental hygiene.
